Preview: A few months ago, my sister and I held our mother’s hand as she drew her final breath. Even now, it continues to feel surreal. The woman who gave life to my sister, brother and me, is gone.

Her name was Verna Amelia and she was in her in her 99th year. Our mom grew up on a farm in Tapleytown in the 1920s, survived tuberculosis, studied to be a bookkeeper, then worked for the local hydro office and The Royal Bank. She married our dad during the Second World War and went on to become the classic stay-at-home mother.

Preview: I stumbled upon Marie Kondo and her book, “The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up,” a few years ago online. To my surprise, I really did find the book to be … well … life-changing. So much so, in fact, that I wanted to share my experience on social media.

You’re not alone. When Eat, Pray, Love first hit the shelves, travel agencies did a booming business sending women from all over the world to Italy, India and Indonesia in search of themselves. Call it the promotional equivalent of a commercial airing during the Super Bowl. Instead of selling Snickers bars, it sold us the dream of connecting with our souls. Elizabeth Gilbert’s real-life story of embracing life after divorce struck a chord with a lot of people.

Preview: I used to make my living reporting the news. Lately, I’ve been doing my best to ignore the news completely. Maybe you can relate.

Among other things, of course, the world has recently teetered on the brink of nuclear war, the president of the United States is routinely caught lying to the media, and the earth’s temperature is so hot, the polar ice caps are melting. As dear departed Dad would say, “The world has gone to hell in a hand basket.” Heck, life in general can be enough to make us lose our grip.
